Caroly A. Shumway, Ph.D.

Dr. Shumway writes for the “Brain Basics” section of Autism Reading Room. She obtained a B.A. with honors in Biology from Wellesley College. She earned her Ph.D. in Neuroethology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She researched the evolution of social and habitat complexity in vertebrates at the New England Aquarium and pursued postdoctoral work in neurodevelopment at Caltech, in comparative neuroethology at Boston University, and in neurophysiology as a Grass Fellow. She received the Capranica Foundation Award in Neuroethology for her thesis identifying differences among multiple electrosensory maps in weakly electric fish. She has published 14 research articles on brain and behavior.
