Advances are novel technologies or methodologies that bring us one step closer to the ultimate goal: a successful and fulfilling life for anyone with ASD.
Advances may come in the shape of new methods to diagnose ASD at a younger age, or they might be better ways to define the genetic risk factors of autism. Some advances are simply novel research methods that allow us to better understand the brain.
Given that hundreds of genetic variants have been linked to ASD and that each of these variations account for no more than 1% of the reported ASD cases, advances that will allow us—scientists, clinicians, families, and affected individuals—to understand the genetic, environmental, and brain dynamics of ASD are key.
The knowledge gained from scientific advances will hopefully enable diagnosis at a younger age, clarify the basis of distinctive behaviors, and provide individualized therapies.
