Biomarker Conclusions
The establishment of an ASD biomarker is a grand, but worthwhile, goal. Although scientists have tested multiple avenues of biomarker identification, the sample sizes and the scope of the ASD spectrum tested have been small.
Some of the requisites for ASD biomarker establishment are:
- Testing large enough cohorts to obtain significant findings
- Categorizing biomarkers along the ASD spectrum (probably one biomarker will not work for the entire spectrum)
- Holding in-depth discussions about the ethical implications of biomarker-based ASD screening.
Biomarkers have become important, multipurpose tools in the clinic. With continued research by dedicated scientists, the establishment of a set of biomarkers for ASD is promising.
